How to read this

  • Histogram bars — Each bar groups rooftops whose value falls into that range. Taller bars mean more rooftops. The shape tells you whether values cluster tightly or spread out.
  • Mean (teal dashed line) — The arithmetic average: add every value and divide by how many there are. Sensitive to extreme outliers.
  • Median (orange dashed line) — The middle value when everything is sorted. Half of rooftops are below, half are above. Less affected by outliers than the mean.
  • Std dev (standard deviation) — How spread out the values are around the mean. Low = most rooftops are close to the average; high = values vary widely.
  • Range — The smallest and largest values observed.
  • Normal curve fit (arrow right) — A bell curve drawn from this data's mean and std dev. If the histogram bars match the curve closely, the data is approximately normal. If the bars lean to one side, the distribution is skewed.
  • If mean > median, the distribution is right-skewed — a few high outliers are pulling the average up. If mean < median, the opposite (left-skewed).
